Better learning in Dirac - TROX energy-efficient air conditioning for a new School

Dirac is a village of 1500 people and situated about 50 km east of Cognac, not far from the Périgord-Limousin Nature Park in south-western France. In 2014/2015 a new school with a useful floor area of 1500 m2 was built in Dirac. The building with an X-shaped layout (actually reminiscent of the TROX logo) was erected on the foundations of a nursing home based on plans by architect Aaron Poole from Bordeaux.

The school was opened in 2015. In order to keep the operating costs to a minimum and to provide pupils and teachers with a good air quality while not neglecting energy efficiency, the Dirac school opted for a ventilation and air conditioning system from TROX. TROX has supplied an X-CUBE air handling unit with controls of the latest generation. The air handling unit comprises sensors, an automatic control system and the most advanced graphical user interface. Data exchange is via an integral bus system.

The six classrooms, the cafeteria, the teachers' meeting room and function rooms are fitted with sensors that measure the room temperature and CO2 content; the measured values are used to control the VFC volume flow controllers for supply air and extract air. Up to 4200 m3 air can be treated per hour. The energy-efficient system ensures that the rooms are not unnecessarily ventilated outside of school hours. Even more energy is saved with integral adiabatic cooling. Heat pumps or other cooling systems are hence not required.

The system was designed and implemented by TROX France based in Rungis near Paris.
