We are increasingly receiving questions from customers who fear that they could become infected with the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) from touching surfaces or objects. Here is our statement on this.
Due to the previously mentioned methods of transmission and the relatively low environmental stability of coronaviruses, on the basis of current scientific knowledge, it is unlikely that SARS-CoV-2 can be transmitted via inanimate surfaces or objects.
To date, there has been no documentation of transmission via inanimate surfaces; the risk of infection with SARS-CoV-2 via surfaces that are not found in the direct environment of a symptomatic patient – including, for example, imported goods, imported foodstuffs or consumer goods and toys, tools, computers, clothes or shoes, postal items or luggage – therefore seems to be unlikely.
This assessment is based on the latest publication on the survivability of known coronaviruses by scientists of the Universities of Greifswald and Bochum.
