AIR DISTRIBUTION IN CLEAN ROOMS

The selection of the airflow concept for a clean room depends on the following:

  • The air cleanliness class
  • The process
  • The spatial requirements

DIFFERENT PROCESSES REQUIRE DIFFERENT FLOW CONCEPTS

Discharge pattern, Mode of action and The effectiveness of a clean room concept depends on the construction of the air inlets and outlets, as well as their combination and spatial arrangement.

In the occupied zone the ideal air distribution can be achieved with high induction levels that lead to a rapid reduction of airflow velocities and of the temperature differences between room air and supply air.

If the goal is a laminar flow, the airflow velocity and a constant airflow must be maintained.

AIR DISTRIBUTION STRATEGIES FOR CLEAN ROOMS

LOW-TURBULENCE LAMINAR FLOW (LF)

Low-turbulence laminar flow (LF) is characterised by an evenvelocity profile and almost parallel flow lines across the entire cross selection of the clean area. With LF, maximum air cleanliness classes can be achieved – even in large clean air areas.

Low-turbulence laminar flow is used where products and processes are particularly sensitive and need to be protected from contamination. Here, the recirculation and/or exhaust air is extracted close to the ground.

LOW-TURBULENCE LAMINAR FLOW (LF) FOR MICROELECTRONIC PROCESSES

A special feature of microelectronics is that the recirculation and/or exhaust air is extracted via a raised floor so as not to influencethe laminar flow near the ground.

TURBULENT FLOW

Turbulent flow means that the primary air mixes with the induced room air. Clean air is not supplied across the entire room but only at selected points, typically through ceiling swirl diffusers. The high induction causes good mixing of the room air and flooding of the clean air area.

The turbulence flow combines final HEPA filters with a swirl diffuser. The recirculation and/or exhaust air is usually extracted close to the ground.

DIRECTIONAL FLOW

Directional flow is particularly suitable for separating clean areas from impure or less clean areas. The Here, the discharge pattern runs across the room from one side to the other.. This can be across the wall surface across the room or from one side up to the other side down.

Directional flow is used where a transfer of particles from one area to another area is to be prevented. Ideal for airlocks between two cleanliness zones.

AIR MANAGEMENT IN CLEAN ROOMS

Your clean room becomes clean not only through the air exchange and the filtration stage.

To make your clean room safe for operation, Air management systems are also very important in addition to air change and filtration. They ensure an even air balance and regulate the various air volume flows in the room, such as supply air, fresh air, recirculated air and extract air.

Depending on the room type and classification, there may be an additional control variable – room pressure – in addition to room balance control. As clean rooms are becoming increasingly airtight, it is particularly important to use a system that meets these high requirements.

  • Intelligent components communicate with complementary to one another, they monitor and control parameters for clean rooms and ensure that these parameters are maintained.
  • Ventilation and air conditioning components must communicate with each other, only then can they also work together perfectly – especially when they serve the safety of people and facilities.
  • Intelligent communication systems for data to be queried, collected, made visible and monitored via the central BMS.

AIR MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS: CENTRALISED OR DECENTRALISED?

TROX room air management systems are optimised for high system requirementssuch as those in cleann rooms.

Regardless of whether you need a centralised or decentralised system, TROX offers you a tailor-made solution:

  • Room management function
All room related data and configurations are stored on one controller.

  • Room pressure, temperature, humidity, etc.
Comprehensive control system for the complete HVAC system

  • Interfaces to central BMS
LON, BACnet, Modbus, IP-based web server

  • Plug and play
Automatic data exchange between the controllers; no addressing required; interactive commissioning

  • Easy maintenance
including room diagnosis and room configuration

  • Rapid and precise response of the setpoint values

  • Modular structure of the hardware

ROOM BALANCE, ROOM PRESSURE, LEAKAGE – ALL REGULATED!

Targeted positive pressure in clean room production avoids contamination and prevents undesired airflows or undesired particles from entering a room.

TROX provides systems which ensure that the correct positive pressure is maintained.

Complex room balancing and room monitoring functions are likewise possible.

  • Via the system's internal communication line, all network participants can be networked quickly and easily via plug and play, which ensures a continuous data exchange between these participants.

  • The system can easily be connected to the central BMS using the standard communication interfaces LON, BACnet, or Modbus.

  • Quick-response control loops are suitable for the volume flow control in installations and for room pressure control.

  • Crucial for effective and efficient room pressure control is a defined leakage. . As rooms are built tighter and tighter, it is even more important to plan the right leakage for each room.

SAFE AIR FILTERS FOR CLEAN ROOMS

If you consider that the structural width of an electronic conductor on a microchip is around 30–250 nanometres – for comparison, a human hair is around 300 times as thick – you get an idea of just how strict the requirements on clean room technology and associated filter systems are.

As high-efficiency particulate filters for the separation of the smallest particles in clean room systems, HEPA and ULPA filters are used. They ensure a particularly high level of air cleanliness and can separate even submicrometre germs and particles.

SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE YOUR ENERGY COSTS AND CO2 EMISSIONS

Filters are supposed to separate particles in the air – and they are an obstacle to the airflow. As the differential pressure increases, the energy efficiency decreases. The goal is minimising the loss.

TROX has therefore developed air filters that reduce the inevitable increase in the pressure difference and thus reduce the system resistance.

TROX offers filter media with extremely fine pleats and aerodynamically optimised filter units that help to save up to 50 % energy in comparison with conventional filters. reimbursed.

FIRE PROTECTION AND SMOKE EXTRACT IN CLEAN ROOMS

A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO CLEAN ROOMS MUST BE THE GOAL!

  • Clean rooms are high-risk areas that must be treated with special care during planning. The requirements for clean rooms are particularly demanding in the pharmaceutical, medical technology, biotechnology and semiconductor and food manufacturing industries.

  • Based on the risk of contamination for people, products and the environment, these spaces must be closely monitored and controlled.

  • The clean room is the heart of production of sensitive, valuable goods. Any contamination, for example by dust, microorganisms or even smoke, can severely disrupt production processes and product quality.

  • However, personal safety also poses a particular challenge, since, on the one hand, no toxic substances may be released during the evacuation and on the other hand a correct discharge may no longer be possible.

  • As typical causes of fire, as well as spontaneous ignitions or leaks in the containers of easily flammable or spontaneously combustible liquids or gases.

  • Within minutes, fire damage to equipment and installations cause losses in the millions. Even a small fire can cause considerable damage by producing and spreading smoke.

  • For this reason, a high safety level in clean rooms with preventive and active fire protection is particularly important and absolutely necessary.

COMPREHENSIVE SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR SAFETY

In the event of a fire, personal safety, support of the fire and rescue service, and protection of property are the prime objectives, and they have to be met by an advanced central BMS and an effective safety management concept:

Through the comprehensive integration of all components, we combine these systems into total solutions for your specific requirements.

SAFETY FOR PRODUCTS AND PROCESSES

Ventilation and air conditioning in clean rooms means, first and foremost, controlling undesired airborne particles.

Controlling the diverse, interdependent factors which influence air cleanliness and safety has led to the development of extremely reliable and energy-efficient clean room systems that address the following aspects:

  • Air treatment, transport, filtration and supply:
Ensuring a high level of air cleanliness and a good indoor air quality.

  • Positive differential pressure

  • Positive differential pressure
Protecting products, processes, people (highest quality standards for production) and the environment from contaminated air by maintaining the required volume flow rates

  • Fire protection:
Preventing the spread of contaminated air and of fire and smoke through ventilation and air conditioning systems in the event of a fire

Loesungen_TextMedia_Kernbereich_gc_01_2021_02_DE_de EN

Contamination control with a multi-layer system: In order to protect clean rooms and devices from contaminants that may be present in adjacent areas with lower levels of air cleanliness, the static pressure in clean rooms should always be higher than the pressure in those adjacent areas.

GMP AIR CLEANLINESS CLASSES

Important standards for pharmaceutical applications are, for example:

  • ISO 14644-1
  • Federal Standard 209E
  • GMP Standard

ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN CLEAN ROOMS

CALCULATING LIFECYCLE COSTS AND SAVING ENERGY

Modern air handling units and systems are controlled in a demand-based manner in the present day. For example, thermal outputs and airflows are adjusted depending on the actual demand.

The energy requirement of an air handling system depends on this control. The climatic conditions occurring at the respective location have an additional influence.

Handling In order to take these effects into consideration at the design stage, TROX offers the possibility for X-CUBE air handling units to determine the life cycle costs (LCC) in an hourly step simulation for a specific air handling unit at a selectable location in the world and for an adjustable operating scenario.

The energy requirements are determined for every hour of the year with the help of weather data records. Based on these LCC calculations, the most efficient device solution can be determined for each application.

REDUCING ENERGY COSTS BY MIXING IN RECIRCULATION AIR

Enter the X-CUBE CROFCU – and with it a completely new design concept for clean rooms. The compact, factory-tested Secondary air unit for use with centralised ventilation and air conditioning systems is typically installed in false ceilings. reimbursed.
